8 Hot Pools to Take Away The Chill This Winter

Our favourite way to spend the winter is by steaming up in a hot pool, so we've put together an insider's guide to where to find the best hot pools around New Zealand.

Miranda

Just over an hour from Auckland central, and on your way to the Coromandel, Miranda Hot Springs is a gem tucked away off the main highway. Filled with fresh mineral water and heated naturally, Miranda has an almost Olympic size hot pool, as well as an adults-only sauna pool, and four private spa pools for a quieter experience.

$19 for adults, and $7 for children, while these prices are a bit higher, they are the most conveniently placed pools to Auckland.

The Lost Spring

This one’s quite far out of the way, but the small town of Whitianga boasts the most stunning hidden gem in the country. Forget your nine-to-five at this adults-only venue by taking a dip with a frozen margarita.

Not only does it have geothermal pools, but The Lost Spring is also a full day spa with all the massages and treatments you’ll need to really relax.

Sapphire Springs

Tucked away in the heart of the Bay of Plenty, and just twenty-minutes from Waihi beach, the Sapphire Springs are located in a beautiful native forest. Not just hot springs, but a holiday park, Sapphire Springs offers everything from camping sites to cabins, it’s the full package for a family trip away this winter.

Costing just $5:50 for adults, and $3:50 for children, these are by far the best-priced thermal pools we know of.

Waingaro

Located in Waikato, south of Auckland, the Waingaro Hot Springs have fully self-contained motel accommodation, as well as unpowered and powered camping sites. As well as a toddler pool and a sulphur-free hot pool, Waingaro is home to New Zealand’s longest waterslide, the Hydroslide, and at just $6 for a day pass to the slide, your kids will be entertained, but more importantly, out of your hair, for hours.

A day pass is $13 for adults and just $7 for children.

Hours: M-F - 9:30am - 8:30pm

SS - 9:30am - 9pm.

Hanmer Springs

Hanmer Springs isn’t just a hot pool complex, our first South Island location on this list is the Disneyland of hot springs. With rock pools, rides, and a lazy river, Hanmer Springs has got everything your family vacation could need and more!

At just $24 for adults and $12 for children, tickets to Hanmer Springs are a bargain for a fun family day out.

Hours: 10am - 9pm.

Franz Josef Hot Pools

The Glacier Hot Pools are a marvel of nature, surrounded by vibrant rainforest, these pools are the perfect way to relax after a long drive down the West Coast. They’ve got their main public pools, private pools, and range of massage therapies to help you unwind.

The main pools are $28 for adults, and $24 for children. The private pools and massage price varies, you can check out their site, with their full price list HERE.

Hours: 11am - 9pm.

Tekapo Springs

With the stunning Mount Cook in the distance, Tekapo springs isn’t just a hot pools experience. As well as the unbelievable views, Tekapo Springs is home to a whole host of activities, like an aqua play area, a day spa, stargazing tours, and a skating rink.

These Springs are great for kids and adults alike, and cost $15 for children, and $27 for adults.

Onsen Hot Pools

Our last pools on this list are probably the most famous, this magical escape is located just outside of Queenstown. Their views are an Instagrammer's dream. Not only hot pools, but massages and locally-sourced treats, the Onsen Hot Pools are the full package. You can catch their shuttle to the pools and enjoy the remote and silent landscapes around the pools.

These prices will set you back a way, but are worth the experience. Children are $17.50 while an adult's daytime pass costs $75, and an evening pass costs $95.

Hours 9am - 11pm.
