Unmissable New Zealand Beaches

Monday, December 10, 2018

With thousands of kilometres of coast, it’s going to be hard to see every beach in New Zealand, but we’ve put together a list of the highlights, so you don’t miss out!

Ninety Mile Beach

Stretching down from the tip of New Zealand, Ninety Mile Beach is the smooth curve of the North. With many tours and treks available to go on, this is one of our busier beaches, but luckily, it’s long enough that you can find a secluded spot even on the sunniest day. Play in the dunes, dip in the ocean, it’s a New Zealand beach at its purest.

Mission Bay

Located in the city of Auckland, Mission Bay showcases a majestic view of Rangitoto Island across the bay. But the most appealing thing about Mission Bay is the fact it’s lined with some of Auckland’s tastiest restaurants and bars. Ice cream parlours, pasta to die for, and even a cheeky slice of New York Pizza, are the ideal place to grab a bite and get your toes in the sand.

Hot Water Beach

Perhaps the most famous beach in New Zealand is the Hot Water Beach, nestled in the heart of the Coromandel. Take your shovel, or rent one when you get there, dig yourself a hole in the sand and watch as it fills with thermally heated water. Check the tide schedule before you go and make sure the tide is out.

Onetangi Beach

Just a quick ferry away from Auckland, Waiheke Island is famous for wine and great food, but it also has a pretty stunning beach. You can always count on it being quite year-round. You’ll get the Auckland views, without all the noise.

Karioitahi beach

About an hour south of Auckland city and along a few winding roads you’ll find a vast stretch of beautiful black sand beach. The black sand is due to a volcanic phenomena and it becomes incredibly hot as the day goes on, so be sure to pack a pair of jandals. If you fancy the ocean views you can always stay at Castaways, a resort perched on the very top of the beach-side cliffs.

Sandfly Bay

A true gem of a beach tucked away close to Dunedin central, Sandfly Bay is a stretch of rolling sand dunes fitted out with a leisurely paced walking track. But Sandfly Bay’s biggest draw is the colony of Yellow-Eyed penguins who call it home. The perfect place to relax and view nature at its finest.

Dead Man Beach

The most remote and peaceful beach we think you should visit is Dead Man Beach. Sure it sounds terrifying, but the beach itself is a slice of paradise that no one will interrupt. Don't expect much sand, it'll be a bit rocky, but there's nothing like the spray of the icy waves. The island is only accessible via plane or more commonly ferry, and pack for the cold, it’s going to be chilly.
